All students are admitted to the MPPPA into Option A (MPPPA with Courses). Once in the program, students may have the opportunity to transfer to Option B (MPPPA with Internship) or Option C (MPPPA with Thesis). Transfer into the Internship or Thesis Option is not guaranteed and requires permission of the MPPPA Director (Internship) or GPD (Thesis).  In order to be considered, students must complete the prescribed number of courses and achieve an acceptable level of academic excellence.

 

Master of/Magisteriate in Arts with Courses Only (Option A)

Upon admission into the program, all students are registered in Option A.

Concentration Courses (12 credits):

All students who opt to remain in the Course Only Option must select 4 courses from the subfield concentration of Public Policy and Administration


Approved Elective and Cognate Courses: (12 credits):

Students must select 4 credits from any of the following subfield concentrations or POLI 601: Research Design.  It is also possible to take cognate courses offered in related disciplines. Approval of the MPPPA Director is required for all cognate courses.

  • Canadian and Quebec Politics
  • International Politics
  • Comparative Politics
  • Political Theory

Extended Research Essay: POLI 691 (12 credits).

The Extended Research Essay is a directed study supervised by a faculty member with whom a student already completed a course in their area of concentration. This degree requirement builds on a term paper submitted at the graduate level and is considered to be a significant revision and extension of the term paper submitted in the concentration course.

 

Master of/Magisteriate in Arts with Internship

(Option B)

Upon admission into the program, students are registered in Option A. Acceptance into Option B (Internship) requires approval of the MPPPA Director and is based on availability of internships, successful completion of course-work, and the student's acceptable level of performance while in the program.

NOTE: The majority of internship positions available are in Ottawa and will require Canadian residency.

Internship with Research Paper: POLI 693 (21 credits).

The internship is a four-month job placement in either the public or private sector. Students are assigned a faculty supervisor for their internship research paper which is presented in an oral examination with the MPPPA director, Supervisor, and Second Reader. The internship research paper is an original theoretical work that comprises a series of policy recommendations that contribute to the policy process.

French Requirement:

Students in the Internship Option are expected to demonstrate an ability to read and understand literature relevant to public policy in French.  The language exam consists of translating a passage of French (dictionaries are allowed) into English.

 

Master of/Magisteriate in Arts with Thesis (Option C)

Upon admission into the program, students are registered in Option A. Acceptance into Option C (Thesis) requires approval of the GPD Director and is based on availability of an appropriate supervisor, successful completion of prescribed course-work, and the student's acceptable level of performance while in the program.

Concentration Courses (6 credits):

Students must select their 2 concentration courses from the subfield in which they will write their thesis. Students may write a thesis in the following subfields:

  • Public Policy and Administration
  • Canadian and Quebec Politics
  • International Politics
  • Comparative Politics
  • Political Theory


Approved Elective and Cognate Courses (6 credits):

Students may select their 2 elective courses from any subfield concentrations or POLI 601: Research Design.  It is also possible to take cognate courses offered in related disciplines. Approval of the GPD Director is required for all cognate courses. Electives courses can be from:

  • Canadian and Quebec Politics
  • International Politics
  • Comparative Politics
  • Political Theory

Thesis Proposal: POLI 694 (3 credits).

This course is a directed study involving a comprehensive understanding of the literature in the area of research directly relevant to the thesis topic under the direction of a faculty supervisor. It is usually taken in the last semester of coursework. The written assignment involves a comprehensive literature review, annotated bibliography and research design that culminates in a thesis proposal presented in an oral defence with the GPD, supervisor, and second reader.

Thesis: POLI 696 (24 credits).

Students who elect this option work under the supervision of a faculty thesis director on a topic approved by the students graduate thesis committee. The thesis is defended before a committee consisting of the thesis director and supervisor, and second reader.
